Course Descriptions

In all 100-level language courses, students may not enroll in a course at a lower level once they have completed a more advanced-level course.

FRE 101/102 /103 French for Beginners 1 course unit each (every semester)

An introduction to spoken and written French, emphasizing the skills of comprehension and speaking, complemented by practice in reading and writing. Language laboratory and Recitation/conversation hour required. Students are urged to complete FRE 101, 102, and 103 in consecutive semesters.

FRE 211/Introduction to the French and Francophone World 1 course unit (every semester)

Prerequisite: FRE 103 or placement into 200 level, or permission of instructor

Designed to provide intensive oral and written practice in French at the intermediate level through selected readings and discussion of contemporary issues. Emphasis on vocabulary building, increased oral proficiency, language laboratory and conversation hour are required.

FRE 240/Introduction to French Literature 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisite: FRE 211 and FRE 301, or permission of instructor

Introductory survey of French literature from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century. Major works are read in complete form orexcerpts, and placed in their historical and cultural contexts. Fundamental approaches to literary interpretation will be introduced.

FRE 241/Introduction to African Francophone Literature 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisite: FRE 211 and FRE 301, or permission of instructor

A survey of Francophone literature and culture from the Negritude movement to the present. Themes such as tradition versus modernity, the sacred and the profane, problems of nationality and identity are analyzed. A postcolonial reading of poems, novels, and films by French speaking African writers and filmmakers will help gain an understanding of thematic expressions of Francophone Africa.

FRE 255/French for Business 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisite: Two FRE 200-level courses or one FRE 200-level course and one FRE 300-level course, or permission of instructor.

Focuses on the development of language skills in French specific to the field of business as well as the on the understanding of business practices in the Francophone world. Particular attention is given to the acquisition of vocabulary and terminology pertinent to French business activities .

FRE 301/Advanced French Conversation and Composition I 1 course unit (every semester)

Prerequisite: FRE 211

Designed to give students a command of the spoken and written language by means of oral and written exercises, and cultural activities. Language laboratory and recitation/conversation hours to improve comprehension and oral proficiency are required.

FRE 302/Advanced French Conversation and Composition II 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisite: FRE 211 or FRE 301

Designed to give students a command of the spoken and written language by means of oral and written exercises, and cultural activities. Language laboratory and recitation/conversation hours to improve comprehension and oral proficiency are required.

FRE 305/Maghrebian Literature and Cultures 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisites: FRE 211 on the literary movement of the Maghreb from the late colonization period to present. Students will master a general knowledge of North African history, society, and culture and become acquainted with major authors, themes and cultural as well as political movements of the Maghreb.

FRE 322/Cultural Aspects of Contemporary France 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisite: Two FRE 200-level courses or one FRE 200-level course and one FRE 300-level course, or permission of instructor.

A study of France, and of intellectual, artistic, and spiritual aspects of French society. Reading and discussion of cultural texts, articles, and interviews; written exercises and compositions designed to give students an active command of the language.

FRE 370/Topics in French 1 course unit (occasionally)

Prerequisite: Two FRE 200-level courses or one FRE 200-level course and one FRE 300-level course, or permission oand/or FRE 301, or permission of the instructor.

This course focuses on a different topic each semester: Paris, French cinema, Francophone cinema, French gastronomy….

FRE 371/Topics in French (English) 1 course unit (occasionally)

Focuses on a different topic each semester. This course, taught in English, will not count toward a minor in French.

FRE 391/Independent Study in French variable course units (every semester)

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor

FRE 497/ Senior Seminar
